National Synoptic Situation
National Temperature and Rainfall

Rainย typically refers to steady, continuous precipitation that lasts for a longer period, sometimes hours or even days. It can vary in intensity, but it's usually more consistent and widespread.
Showers, on the other hand, are shorter bursts of rain, often intermittent. They can be heavy but usually don't last long. Showers are more sporadic and may be followed by dry periods or other types of weather, like sun or clouds.
National Synoptic Situation
QLD:
Well, it looks like a trough is making its way over to central Australia, but don't worry, it's going to weaken in a day or two - just like my will to exercise. Meanwhile, a ridge in eastern Queensland is going to hang around for a bit, getting stronger on Friday as a high moves in. And let's not forget about that trough in the far northern Coral Sea - it's going to team up with the ridge to bring us some windy and showery weather along the east coast. Oh, and there's a tropical low hanging out in the Coral Sea too, but thankfully it's going to steer clear of us for now. So, grab your umbrella and hold onto your hats, folks - it's going to be a wild ride!
NSW and ACT:
Well, it seems like we've got some weather shenanigans happening near Hunter and the Mid North Coast, with a trough deciding to take a nap and let a high pressure ridge take over. Meanwhile, another trough is just hanging out in the far western inland, probably enjoying the peace and quiet. But wait, there's more excitement on the horizon! This weekend and early next week, a new trough is planning to crash the party in the southern and central areas of the state, bringing along a southerly wind change for added drama. And just when you thought things couldn't get any crazier, a high pressure system is set to make a grand entrance, gliding across Bass Strait and staking its claim in the southern Tasman Sea by Tuesday. It's going to extend a ridge across the east while the original trough continues to loiter in the west, probably causing some side-eye glances from the high pressure system. So, grab your umbrella and sunglasses, folks, because it looks like we're in for a wild ride of weather patterns and atmospheric theatrics. Stay tuned for the next episode of Weather Wars: Troughs, Ridges, and High Pressure Systems, coming soon to a sky near you!
VIC:
Looks like Mother Nature is playing a game of "follow the leader" with high pressure centers and cold fronts. Today and tomorrow, we'll be enjoying a nice northerly airstream, thanks to a pressure center chilling in the Tasman Sea. But hold onto your hats, folks! On Saturday, a trough and cold front are making their way from the west, ready to crash our party. The front will sweep across the state on Sunday, bringing with it some cooler air and a south to southwesterly airstream. So get ready to swap out those shorts for sweaters as we head into next week. Mother Nature sure knows how to keep us on our toes!
SA:
Well, folks, it looks like we've got a high pressure system making itself comfy over the Tasman Sea. A trough and cold front are crashing the party in SA on Saturday, but they'll be taking their sweet time, stalling over the North East Pastoral district on Sunday. Meanwhile, another high pressure system is playing hide and seek southwest of Perth, but don't worry, it'll be making its way eastwards by early next week. So, get ready to break out those umbrellas and sunglasses, because it's going to be a rollercoaster of weather changes in the coming days!
WA:
Well, isn't that just peachy? We've got a broad trough hanging out over inland northern parts of the State, like it's on a leisurely vacation. Meanwhile, a tropical low (21U) is lurking to the northwest of the Kimberley, just waiting to make its grand entrance. Watch out, folks, this system might throw itself a little tropical cyclone party over the weekend, but don't worry, it's polite enough to stay well offshore from the WA coast. So, grab your swimsuits and sunscreen, because it's going to be a wild ride...from a safe distance, of course.
TAS:
So, it looks like Tasmania is in for a rollercoaster of weather this weekend. We've got a high ridging over us right now, but it's packing up and heading to the Tasman Sea tonight. Expect some northerly winds on Saturday as we brace ourselves for an approaching cold front on Sunday. But don't worry, another high will swoop in on Sunday and stick around until Monday. So get ready for some more changes as that high moves over us late Monday into Tuesday. Mother Nature just can't make up her mind, can she?
NT:
Well, buckle up folks, because a ridge over southern NT is about to throw in the towel in preparation for a trough that's ready to throw some shade on southern districts this weekend. But fear not, another ridge is waiting in the wings over southwestern NT, ready to swoop in and extend its reach into central districts starting early next week. It's like a game of meteorological musical chairs out there, so make sure you've got your weather app handy to stay one step ahead of the ridge-trough dance-off.

NQ Rainfall 24 Accumulated (ACCESS G)
Monsoon Update
Tropical low (22U/93P) is currently located about 229 nautical miles northeast of Cairns, Australia, at 14.2S 148.6W. Satellite images show a developing low-level circulation with increased cloud activity to the northeast. Conditions are moderate for further development, with wind shear around 15-20 knots, weak upper-level outflow, and warm sea temperatures of 29-30ยฐC. Models agree that the system will track southeast over the next 24 to 48 hours. Maximum sustained winds are estimated at 23 to 28 knots, with a minimum pressure of 1002 mb. The chance of it becoming a significant tropical cyclone in the next 24 hours is moderate.
There is some wild movement in the GFS forecast and that is normal for that, hints to how to read the forecasts:
GFS: Great for 12 to 16 days out to get an idea of what is ahead, GFS picked this system earlier than the others.
ECMWF: Accurate within 4 days, 5 to 8 is better than most, 8 to 12 it tends to hedge it's bets.
ACCESS-G: Reasonably good within 4 days.
ACCESS-C: Has performed the best within 48 hours, but we don't have the range in Windy to see it at it's best, use Meteye for ACCESS C, however I have found during competition it has been a bit inconsistent depending on the latitude. However it is near useless with offshore systems. The other interactive map is ACCESS G, it is useful, but not as easy to use as Windy.com (http://www.bom.gov.au/australia/charts/viewer/index.shtml)
US NAVY: (JTWC) Once they start up their modeling they are hard to beat. Not perfect but they track cyclones in our region really well.
So with the wild movement I would not put any faith in GFS until about the 26th, ECMWF is probably the one to follow right at the moment, then ACCESS-G both on Windy. Some have access to better detail in ECMWF, I am not earning enough in Wally's Weather to afford that yet. So if you would like to help get yourself a Big Shout.
Temperature and Rainfall Forecast - Access-G

Saturday, 22nd February
Looks like we've got a mix of sunshine and showers scattered throughout the region today. You might want to grab your umbrella if you're heading out, especially if you're up north near Burketown or Coen where there could be some thunderstorms. And if you're thinking of taking a trip along the east coast north of Bowen, be prepared for some potentially heavy rain. Don't forget your raincoat! For those of you down south of Cooktown, hold onto your hats because there will be some fresh to strong southeasterly winds blowing through. And if you're wondering about temperatures, it'll be a bit warmer in the west and Peninsula regions, but slightly cooler in the east. So, dress accordingly and stay dry out there, folks!
Sunday, 23rd February
Grab your sunscreen and shades, folks! It's mostly sunny down south near Hughenden, but don't let that fool you - scattered showers are lurking in other areas, with a chance of isolated thunderstorms up north by Cairns. Keep an eye out for those showers turning into full-on downpours around the Wet Tropics. And hold onto your hats, because those southeasterly winds might just blow them away. Temperatures are soaring out west, while staying cool and collected out east. Stay prepared for whatever weather comes your way!
Monday, 24th February
Grab your sunscreen and sunglasses if you're heading to the interior south of Hughenden - it's mostly sunny there. For the rest of us, expect some isolated to scattered showers, with a chance of isolated thunderstorms north of Cooktown to Kowanyama. Showers may even become widespread at times north of Cairns to Weipa. Don't forget to hold onto your hats, as fresh to strong southeasterly winds will be blowing along the east coast. Maximum temperatures will be soaring well above average in the west, above average in the remaining interior, and just near or slightly below average elsewhere. It's like Mother Nature can't make up her mind today!
Tuesday, 25th February
Well, it seems like Hughenden in the interior south will be basking in mostly sunny weather, while the southwest will be trying to make up its mind with some occasional clouds. Expect some isolated to scattered showers in other areas, with a sprinkle of isolated thunderstorms up north. Showers might decide to throw a party along the east coast later on. Don't be surprised if you feel like you're being blown away by some fresh to strong southeasterly winds along the coast. As for temperatures, the west will be feeling hot, hot, hot, while the interior will be comfortably warm. Everywhere else, you might want to grab a light jacket just in case.
