National Synoptic Situation

National Temperature and Rainfall

  • Rainย typically refers to steady, continuous precipitation that lasts for a longer period, sometimes hours or even days. It can vary in intensity, but it's usually more consistent and widespread.

  • Showers, on the other hand, are shorter bursts of rain, often intermittent. They can be heavy but usually don't last long. Showers are more sporadic and may be followed by dry periods or other types of weather, like sun or clouds.

National Synoptic Situation

QLD:

It seems like our good ol' ridge in eastern Queensland is here to stay for a while, causing some enhanced winds and showers along the east coast thanks to a pesky trough in the far northern Coral Sea. And don't forget about that tropical low out there, slowly making its way eastward but thankfully staying far away from our lovely Queensland coast this weekend. Looks like it might even do a little dance to the southeast and then south next week, with a strong possibility of further development. Keep an eye out for that trough creeping into the southwest late next week as well. So, stay tuned for some potentially interesting weather ahead, folks!

NSW and ACT:

Well, folks, it looks like we've got a high pressure system hanging out over the Tasman Sea, sending a ridge over to northeast New South Wales. Meanwhile, a trough and cold front are making their way over from the west to crash the party. The trough will cause some chaos in the south on Sunday before moving on to the central areas on Monday. But don't worry, it's expected to run out of steam by Tuesday as a new high swoops in to bring back the stability. So get ready for some warmer temperatures later in the week thanks to those northerly winds. Mother Nature sure knows how to keep us on our toes!

VIC:

Well, it seems like the Tasman Sea is playing puppet master with a high pressure system, making sure we all get a nice northerly airstream. But hold onto your hats, because a trough and cold front are coming to crash the party in western Victoria on Saturday night, then spreading their bad vibes across the rest of the State on Sunday. After that drama, a new high pressure system in the Bight will swoop in like a superhero, bringing a mostly southerly flow for the beginning of the week. Just when you think it's safe to go outside, winds will do a little dance and turn northerly again on Wednesday, only to be followed by yet another cold front lurking in the shadows to the south. Stay tuned, folks, the weather rollercoaster is far from over!

SA:

Well, it appears we have a trough and cold front crashing the party in South Australia, making their way northeast like uninvited guests. Meanwhile, a high pressure system is lurking southwest of Perth, slowly making its way eastwards to the Tasman Sea by Wednesday. Just your typical weather drama unfolding before our very eyes. Stay tuned for the next episode of "Weather Wars."

WA:

Well isn't this trough just hogging all the attention in central and northern WA? It's like the diva of weather systems. But fear not, it's going to slither its way up north towards the Kimberley and Pilbara coasts over the weekend, leaving us southerners with a nice ridge to bask in. So grab your sunscreen and flip flops, because this trough is on the move!

TAS:

Well, brace yourselves for some northerlies as a high to the east takes charge. But don't get too comfortable, folks, because a cold front is headed our way on Sunday morning. And just when you thought it was safe to come out, another high will be making its grand entrance on Monday, followed by a cold front on Wednesday. It's like a never-ending weather rollercoaster ride here in Tasmania! So, make sure to pack your umbrella and sunscreen because you never know what Mother Nature has in store for us next.

NT:

Get ready for some exciting weather patterns, folks! A trough is making its way across the southern districts tonight and Sunday, followed by a ridge that will develop in southern NT. So, stay tuned for some interesting changes in the skies coming our way. Time to dust off those umbrellas and weatherproof your plans!

The below shows an image zoomed right back so you can see the two Highs circled in blue, and the low in purple. The two Highs have a void between them where it is uncertain how far the Low can venture South before being pushed to the West towards the QLD coast. The yellow circled area is this area. We can see some difference between the forecasts on the 28th, and the 1st March is worse. However it is looking more and more likely a brush with the coast, or as I said earlier in the week, surfs up! So the areas around Bundaberg should be getting ready for some rough weather regardless of crossing and that includes heavy rain, because as the system weakens, the rain will become wider spread and could cause coastal flash flooding. So be prepared, there may not be a crossing but it could get close enough to still create a big wet event with rough seas.

Temperature and Rainfall Forecast - Access-G

Sunday, 23rd February

Looks like Hughenden will be basking in mostly sunshine today while other areas may experience some scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. Don't forget your umbrella if you're near Cairns or the Gulf of Carpentaria! And if you're on the Cassowary Coast, showers might be putting a damper on your day. Expect some breezy winds from the east to southeast, possibly getting a bit strong along the east coast. Temperatures will be above average in the west and southwest, but just about average everywhere else. So grab your sunscreen and raincoat, folks, and get ready for another thrilling day of weather in our lovely corner of the world!

Monday, 24th February

Looks like Mother Nature is feeling a bit indecisive today. Inland areas will be basking in the sunshine, while scattered showers will be playing a game of hide and seek elsewhere. Don't be surprised if you hear a rumble or two between Innisfail and Bowen, and up in the northern and western parts of Cape York Peninsula. Temperatures will be cranking up in the interior, but staying just about average elsewhere. Time to dust off that umbrella and keep an eye out for those sneaky thunderstorms!

Tuesday, 25th February

Looks like we've got some clouds hanging around in the interior today, but don't worry, they're just here for a visit. Expect some showers scattered here and there, with a few thunderstorms crashing the party up near Cairns and along the Gulf of Carpentaria. Temperatures are feeling a bit extra in the interior, but just average everywhere else. So grab your sunscreen and umbrella, because it's shaping up to be a day of surprises!

Wednesday, 26th February

Grab your umbrella because we've got some isolated showers scattered around, with a side of isolated thunderstorms up north in Cape York Peninsula. Expect above average temps in the interior, and near average temps elsewhere. Time to break out the sunscreen and raincoat, folks!

Region Round-up - BOM
