National Synoptic Situation

National Temperature and Rainfall

  • Rainย typically refers to steady, continuous precipitation that lasts for a longer period, sometimes hours or even days. It can vary in intensity, but it's usually more consistent and widespread.

  • Showers, on the other hand, are shorter bursts of rain, often intermittent. They can be heavy but usually don't last long. Showers are more sporadic and may be followed by dry periods or other types of weather, like sun or clouds.

National Synoptic Situation

QLD:

Looks like we've got a firm ridge hanging out over eastern Queensland for a while. There's also a trough chilling in the far northern Coral Sea, but don't worry, it's forecasted to weakly meander northeast. Oh, and there's a tropical low in the mix too, just casually moving eastwards away from the coast. It's expected to do some fancy footwork turning southeast and then south, with a high chance of further development. So, what does all this mean for us? Well, brace yourselves for enhanced winds and showers along the east coast over the next few days. And just when you thought that was enough excitement, a trough might crash the party in the far southwest of the state later this week. So, grab your umbrellas and hold onto your hats, folks. It's going to be a wild ride!

NSW and ACT:

So, it looks like we've got a high pressure system hanging out over the Tasman Sea, sending a ridge to northeast New South Wales. Meanwhile, a deep low pressure system is doing its own thing down south. This whole situation is causing some unsettled weather in the southern districts today, and it's going to creep into the central areas by Monday before finally giving up and fading away. But hey, don't worry, because on Tuesday a new high is expected to saunter over from the Bight to the Tasman Sea, extending a ridge over the east of the state. At the same time, a broad trough is going to start forming out west. And guess what? This whole song and dance routine is going to keep on going through the rest of the week. So, get your umbrellas ready, folks!

VIC:

It seems like Victoria is in for a bit of a weather rollercoaster this week. A trough and cold front will be making their way through eastern Victoria on Sunday night, followed by a high pressure system swooping in to bring some southerly winds on Monday. But wait, there's more! Tuesday will see the winds shift to the east, and then to the north on Wednesday as the high pressure system decides to take a leisurely stroll across Tasmania and into the Tasman Sea. And just when you thought it was safe to go outside, a trough will be moving across Victoria on Wednesday along with a cold front lurking to the south. So, grab your umbrellas and hold on tight, because it's going to be a wild ride in the world of weather this week.

SA:

Looks like we've got a stubborn high pressure system camping out to the south of us this week, while a pesky trough is hanging around up in the far northeast. Just like that one friend who never knows when to leave the party. So, grab your sunglasses and umbrellas, folks - it's going to be a rollercoaster of weather patterns this week!

WA:

So, there's this big trough hanging out over central and northern WA right now. It's like the uninvited guest at a party - just won't leave. But don't worry, it's slowly making its way up north towards the Kimberley and Pilbara coasts for the weekend. Meanwhile, a ridge is sliding in over southern WA, trying to bring some order to the chaos. It's like watching a really awkward dance-off between weather systems. Stay tuned for the next episode of "Weather Wars: WA Edition."

TAS:

Well, it seems Mother Nature is feeling a bit indecisive this week in Tasmania. A cold front is making its way through, bringing along a westerly flow that will stick around until Monday and Tuesday when a high in the Bight takes over. But wait, Wednesday brings another cold front to the party while an additional high sets up camp in the Bight. Things should calm down by Thursday, so at least we have that to look forward to. Just your typical weather rollercoaster in good ol' Tassie.

NT:

So there's this trough thing hanging out in the southern districts, but don't worry, it's going to start slacking off today as a ridge moves in. Just your typical weather shenanigans, nothing to lose sleep over.

Tropical Cyclone Albert has just been called as of about 5pm Sunday the 23rd, and right on cue. However we are still no clearer about the intentions of Albert, we should know around the 26th. Currently the 28th still shows a lot of difference and the 1st of March even more difference. Looking at the High situation again, on the 1st of March the High over NZ is in a slightly different location and thus either guiding Albert to the coast (ECMWF), holding it in place (GFS) or about to allow it to head south (ACCESS) and I expect each of these forecasts to change over night and as I said, right up to about the 26th where it looks like the 1st and 2nd might be the date we see it either cross or head to the graveyard. Either way, TC Albert should cause some erosion along the coast and some decent swell and possibly even heavy rain depending on how close it gets.

Temperature and Rainfall Forecast - Access-G

Monday, 24th February

Looks like it's going to be a scorcher up in the North West, Central West, and Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders districts. Best pack your sunscreen and hydrate like your life depends on it. Stay cool, mates.

Tuesday, 25th February

Grab your umbrella and head to Thargomindah for the chance to witness some rare, isolated thunderstorms. If you're not feeling that adventurous, you can still catch some scattered showers in other areas. Pack your sunscreen though, because those maximum temperatures are soaring above average in the interior. Stay cool, folks!

Wednesday, 26th February

Looks like we've got some patchy clouds hanging out in the interior today. If you're lucky, you might catch a random shower here and there, or even a thunderstorm up north. And hey, don't forget your sunscreen because those temperatures are cranking up in the middle of nowhere. Just your typical day in the land down under.

Thursday, 27th February

Looks like some areas might get a little wet today, so keep an umbrella handy. Temperatures will be on the warmer side in the interior, so maybe consider wearing shorts instead of snow pants. And if you're in northern Cape York Peninsula, don't be surprised if you hear a little thunder - just Mother Nature's way of saying hello.

Region Round-up - BOM

Forecast for North Tropical Coast and Tablelands:

So, it looks like we've got some clouds rolling in, maybe a sprinkle or two. And hey, if you're up north, keep an eye out for a potential thunderstorm - always good to have a little excitement in your day, right? Winds will be coming from the east to southeasterly at about 15 to 25 km/h, so hold onto your hats, folks!
