National Synoptic Situation

National Temperature and Rainfall

  • Rainย typically refers to steady, continuous precipitation that lasts for a longer period, sometimes hours or even days. It can vary in intensity, but it's usually more consistent and widespread.

  • Showers, on the other hand, are shorter bursts of rain, often intermittent. They can be heavy but usually don't last long. Showers are more sporadic and may be followed by dry periods or other types of weather, like sun or clouds.

National Synoptic Situation

QLD:

Looks like Queensland will be under the thumb of a ridge for a while, thanks to a high chilling in the Tasman Sea. Tropical Cyclone Alfred is just hanging out in the Coral Sea, adding some extra oomph to the winds and waves on the east coast. We're not entirely sure what Alfred's game plan is in the long run, but it might decide to crash our party over the weekend. Meanwhile, a trough is loitering in the southwest like a teenager at a mall. So, keep an eye out for some interesting weather shenanigans in the coming days.

NSW and ACT:

So, we've got a trough chilling out inland in northern New South Wales, while a high pressure system is just hanging out over the Tasman Sea, sending a ridge along the coast of New South Wales. This whole setup is basically going to stay the same, except for some southerly changes hitting the southern and central coast later in the week and over the weekend thanks to some cold fronts passing by to the south. Just your typical weather drama unfolding, nothing too exciting.

VIC:

So, it seems like we have a trough making its way across Victoria tonight, followed by a cold front sneaking south. Tomorrow, a ridge will stretch across the state, giving us a break before a few fronts decide to casually brush by southern Victoria on Friday and throughout the weekend. Just another typical weather pattern to keep us on our toes.

SA:

Well, it looks like we've got a stubborn ridge of high pressure hanging out down south this week, while a lazy trough can't seem to make up its mind up in the northeast. On Sunday, a high pressure system will finally kick that trough out of Queensland, giving us some much-needed relief. So, get ready to say goodbye to the indecisive weather and hello to some clear skies!

WA:

Looks like northern WA is getting cozy under a broad trough. Time to break out the umbrellas and rain boots, folks!

TAS:

So, it looks like we've got a little weather drama coming our way. A weak cold front is going to saunter across the west and south tonight. Then, a high is making its grand entrance over Tasmania on Thursday, just in time for the cold front to crash the party on Friday. Saturday is shaping up to be a bit windy with some northwesterly gusts before yet another cold front sweeps in from the west in the evening. Finally, a high will swoop in on Sunday to save the day. Mother nature sure knows how to keep us on our toes!

NT:

It seems like we have a case of weak ridges and troughs scattered across the Northern Territory. The northern part of the Top End will be getting some drier air thanks to a ridge, which means showers and thunderstorms will be taking a bit of a break over the weekend. But don't get too excited, as a high from the Bight will be flexing its muscles on Sunday and strengthening that ridge in the southern NT. So, brace yourselves for a slightly less exciting weather forecast this weekend.

Tropical Cyclone Alfred is now moving south faster than yesterday, with wind speeds increasing from 100 km/h to 110 km/h near the centre. The pressure is at 982 hPa, and it may intensify to Category 3 within the next 24 hours. As expected, the forecast is becoming clearer now that models are aligning, which was predicted to happen around the 26th. Alfred's slow movement means it will likely miss the gap between the high-pressure systems and instead track down the Queensland coast as the high shifts east over New Zealand. Dry air, shown by the blue arrows, will weaken the cyclone over time.

Looking four days ahead, the forecast models are mostly in agreement. The GFS model will update soon and is likely to align more closely with ACCESS-G and ECMWF. All three models suggest that at 2 pm on March 2, the system will be at its closest point to the coast. This suggests that the afternoon heat will help push it away. Over the next few days, it's important to monitor how close the system moves toward the coast. If it speeds up, there is a chance of landfall. If not, it is more likely to track along the coastline without crossing.

Temperature and Rainfall Forecast - Access-G

Thursday, 27th February

Well, it's going to be a scorcher in the Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Central Highlands and Coalfields, Central West and North West districts. Time to break out the fans and sunscreen, folks!

Friday, 28th February

Don't forget your umbrella if you're heading to the northeast tropical coast, where isolated showers are lurking. Scattered showers are also making an appearance along the central and southeast coasts, as well as the far northern Cape York Peninsula. Watch out for thunderstorms in the far northwestern Cape York Peninsula - Mother Nature might be feeling a bit feisty there. Southeasterly winds are blowing pretty hard along the east coast south of Bowen, so hold onto your hats. If you're not in those areas, expect mostly sunny skies elsewhere. Maximum temperatures are soaring well above average in the west and southern interior, with the rest of the interior and other areas not far behind. It's so hot in the far west and northwest that we're officially in severe heatwave territory - so maybe don't plan any outdoor picnics there. Stay cool, folks!

Saturday, 1st March

It's raining here and there up north, scattered showers down south, and a chance of thunder in Torres Strait. The sun's shining pretty much everywhere else. Don't forget your windbreaker if you're heading south of Bowen - those southeasterly winds are no joke. Temperatures are sky high out west and in the southern interior, above average in the rest of the interior, and just about average everywhere else. It's a scorcher out west and up northwest, so stay cool if you're in those parts.

Sunday, 2nd March

Looks like the west will be soaking up the sunshine while the northeast tropical coast will be playing peekaboo with some clouds. Watch out for isolated showers and possible thunderstorms along the Gulf coast and northern Cape York Peninsula - Mother Nature likes to keep things interesting there. And don't forget your umbrella if you're in the eastern districts south of Proserpine, as showers could pop up unexpectedly. Keep an eye on Tropical Cyclone Alfred, because depending on its mood, we could see widespread showers in central and southeastern Queensland. Oh, and hold onto your hats, because the winds in southeastern and central Queensland will be dancing to the cyclone's beat. Temperatures will be all over the place - well above average in the west, above average in the interior and northern Queensland, and just about average everywhere else. If you're in the far west or northwest, you might want to invest in some extra deodorant - it's going to be a severe heatwave out there.

Region Round-up - BOM

Forecast for North Tropical Coast and Tablelands:

Get ready to bask in the mostly sunny skies, with a slight chance of a surprise shower to keep things interesting. Winds will be coming from the south to southeasterly direction at a leisurely 15 to 25 km/h, but don't worry, they'll pick up to a more brisk 20 to 30 km/h as the day goes on. Overnight, temperatures will drop to a cozy 17 to 23 degrees, while daytime highs will hit around 30. Make sure to slap on that sunscreen between 8:30am and 4:30pm, as the UV Index is predicted to soar to a whopping 14, earning it an "Extreme" rating. Mother Nature is clearly feeling a bit feisty today, so be prepared for whatever she throws your way!
