National Synoptic Situation

National Temperature and Rainfall

  • Rainย typically refers to steady, continuous precipitation that lasts for a longer period, sometimes hours or even days. It can vary in intensity, but it's usually more consistent and widespread.

  • Showers, on the other hand, are shorter bursts of rain, often intermittent. They can be heavy but usually don't last long. Showers are more sporadic and may be followed by dry periods or other types of weather, like sun or clouds.

National Synoptic Situation

QLD:

Well, looks like Mother Nature is feeling a bit indecisive with a weakening ridge in southern Queensland and a weak pressure gradient elsewhere. Severe Tropical Cyclone Alfred is just chilling in the Coral Sea, making sure to stir up some winds and waves along the east coast for some added drama. If you're hoping for a beach day, you might want to keep an eye on Alfred as it meanders southwards. There's a slight chance it might decide to crash the party along the central or southern Queensland coast next week, but hey, who knows with these tropical cyclones. Meanwhile, a trough is making its way into the state from the southwest, setting up camp in the interior for a few days. So, get ready for some potentially mixed weather as Alfred plays hard to get and the trough decides to stick around for a while. Just another day in paradise, folks!

NSW and ACT:

Well, looks like we've got a broad trough hanging out in western NSW, while a high pressure ridge is chilling in the northeast. On Friday, that trough is going to make its way east as a high pressure system ridge strolls in from the Indian Ocean. This high pressure system is going to keep on truckin' eastward, eventually making its way to the Tasman Sea early next week. And over in the east, we can expect some southerly surges over the weekend thanks to a cold front tagging along with this high pressure system. So, grab your umbrellas and hold onto your hats, folks! It's going to be a wild ride.

VIC:

It looks like Victoria is getting a bit of a weather makeover this week. A ridge is taking charge and sending a southwesterly flow across the State, with some weak cold fronts making a cameo in the southern areas on Friday and the weekend. By Monday, the winds will do a little dance and turn southeasterly as a high pressure system crosses Tasmania. So, get ready to embrace the change and maybe hold onto your hats!

SA:

Well, looks like we've got a high pressure system playing hide and seek with a trough this week. The high pressure is hanging out south of the state while the trough is just chilling up in the far northeast. But don't worry, by Sunday the high pressure will kick that trough out of Queensland like a bouncer at a club. So get ready for some clear skies and stable weather ahead!

WA:

Looks like there's a big ol' trough just chillin' up in northern WA. Time to break out the maps and figure out what that means for our weather.

TAS:

So, looks like Tasmania is going to have a bit of a rollercoaster weather-wise. The high pressure ridge is going to take a breather before that cold front comes crashing through on Friday. Then, hold onto your hats because Saturday is going to get windy as those northwesterly winds kick in. And just when you think you can relax, another cold front is going to swoop in on Saturday evening. But hey, at least we can look forward to a high pressure system moving in on Sunday and Monday to bring some stability back to our lives. So make sure you're prepared for whatever Mother Nature decides to throw at us โ€“ because she's definitely keeping us on our toes!

NT:

Well folks, it looks like we've got a weak ridge hanging out in the southern part of the Northern Territory, along with a weak trough chilling in the central part. Meanwhile, up north, there's another weak ridge bringing some dry air down south. This means showers and thunderstorms will be few and far between this weekend. And just when you thought things couldn't get any more exciting, a high pressure system will come rolling through the Bight on Sunday, really beefing up that ridge in the southern NT. So get ready for some serious weather action, folks!

Tropical Cyclone Alfred is heading pretty much due South at 13km/h, not breaking any speed limits but its not slow either. It is on track to graze, skim or bounce past the SE coast at a distance of about 500 to 700km away, but enough to produce some gusty conditions and decent swell with possible erosion and some showers. There could be the occasional heavy downpour. But still 4 days away.

Temperature and Rainfall Forecast - Access-G

Friday, 28th February

Well, it seems like the North West, Central West, Central Highland, Coalfields, and Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders districts are playing with fire today. So, if you happen to be in those areas, maybe hold off on the spontaneous bonfires or amateur pyrotechnic displays. Just a thought.

Saturday, 1st March

Grab your surfboards and head south of Seventeen Seventy for some hazardous surf conditions - it's the perfect opportunity for a thrilling swim! Meanwhile, don't forget your sunscreen as maximum temperatures are soaring well above average in the west and southern interior. It's a severe heatwave out there, so stay cool and hydrated. As for showers, they're just feeling a bit isolated and scattered along the central and southeast coasts, and up north in Cape York Peninsula. But don't worry, mostly sunny skies are on the horizon elsewhere. Time to break out those shades and enjoy the sunshine!

Sunday, 2nd March

Well, it seems like Mother Nature has quite the sense of humor today. We've got some isolated to scattered showers hanging out around the central and southeast coasts, just chilling in Torres Strait. And don't forget about K'gari - those showers are feeling a bit more ambitious, trying to spread out and make a name for themselves. Meanwhile, the rest of us get to enjoy some mostly sunny weather, so count your lucky stars. But hold onto your hats (literally), because we've got some hazardous surf conditions lurking south of Seventeen Seventy. So if you were planning on catching some waves, maybe rethink that idea. And speaking of rethinking things, those maximum temperatures are really showing off today. The west and southern interior are practically setting records, while the rest of us are just trying to stay cool. Oh, and let's not forget about the far west and northwest - they're in the midst of a severe heatwave. So if you happen to be in that neck of the woods, maybe invest in some extra sunscreen and a portable fan. Stay safe out there, folks!

Monday, 3rd March

Looks like Mother Nature is feeling a bit moody today, with isolated to scattered showers hanging out around the southeast coast and Torres Strait. The southeast coastal fringe might get in on the action too, depending on what Severe Tropical Cyclone Alfred decides to do. And don't forget to bring your umbrella, because there's a chance of a thunderstorm hanging out around the Gulf Country coast. But hey, don't worry too much - the rest of the region will be mostly sunny. Just make sure to pack some sunscreen, because those maximum temperatures are going to be well above average, especially in the interior. And if you're in the northwest, get ready to sweat it out in some severe heatwave conditions. Stay cool out there, folks!

Region Round-up - BOM

Forecast for North Tropical Coast and Tablelands:

Well, it looks like we might see a sprinkle or two along the coast tonight - just to keep things interesting. But don't worry, the rest of us can rest easy knowing that rain is basically a stranger everywhere else. So, if you were planning on doing some laundry or watering your plants, today might just be your lucky day. The winds will be blowing from the east to southeasterly at a moderate pace, but don't worry, they'll calm down as the night goes on. So, grab your umbrella just in case, and enjoy the gentle breeze while you can. Stay dry out there, folks!
