National Synoptic Situation

National Temperature and Rainfall

  • Rainย typically refers to steady, continuous precipitation that lasts for a longer period, sometimes hours or even days. It can vary in intensity, but it's usually more consistent and widespread.

  • Showers, on the other hand, are shorter bursts of rain, often intermittent. They can be heavy but usually don't last long. Showers are more sporadic and may be followed by dry periods or other types of weather, like sun or clouds.

State conditions

QLD:

Ah, it appears we have a monsoon trough loitering around the base of Cape York Peninsula, causing some mischief up in northern Queensland for a few days. It seems this troublemaker will eventually tire out and weaken, only to make a dramatic comeback in Far North Queensland over the weekend. Meanwhile, a ridge hanging out over the east coast south of the trough will be flexing its muscles, weakening slightly on Wednesday before getting its strength back early next week. So, brace yourselves for some stormy shenanigans and scorching heatwaves, folks! Remember to stay safe out there and keep an eye out for any wild weather coming your way.

NSW and ACT:

Hold on to your hats, folks! It looks like Mother Nature is feeling a bit moody this week, with a high pressure system causing some heatwave action over New South Wales. A trough is set to crash the party, bringing some stormy weather to the mix. Remember to stay safe and keep cool during these turbulent times.

VIC:

Hold onto your hats, folks! A trough is making its way across eastern districts, bringing with it a cooler south to southwesterly airstream. As this trough moves east, a High in the Bight will build a ridge over the State, providing some relief from the heat. However, an inland trough lingering over northern Victoria may still bring some unsettled weather. As we head into Thursday, the High will slowly move into the Tasman Sea, while the inland trough extends further south over Victoria. By Friday, this trough will move east across the State, potentially bringing some stormy weather. But fear not, as another High in the Bight will build a ridge over Victoria during the weekend, hopefully bringing some calmer conditions. In the midst of all this meteorological madness, remember to stay safe and be prepared for any storms or heatwaves that may come your way. And as always, keep an eye on the forecast for any updates. Stay safe out there!

SA:

As we journey through the vast expanse of our state, a trough meanders from the distant north west to the far-reaching south east, inching its way towards the east. Simultaneously, a high pressure system lounges south of the Bight, lazily casting weak ridges over the coast. This high is preparing for a glamorous eastward migration over Tasmania come Wednesday. Just as the trough bids us adieu and exits the state stage on Friday, a new high will saunter in, ready to set up camp in our southern regions. With such dramatic movements in the atmospheric theatre, it's important to stay safe and be prepared for any storms or heatwaves that may come our way. Remember, when Mother Nature puts on a show, it's best to sit back, relax, and enjoy the spectacle from a safe distance.

WA:

Ah, it appears we have a rather extensive trough lingering over the North Interior and southern Kimberley, stretching its reach into the Pilbara region. It seems this trough may bring about some interesting weather patterns, potentially stirring up storms and heatwaves. Remember to take necessary precautions to stay safe during these conditions.

TAS:

Looks like Mother Nature is feeling a bit dramatic this week in Tasmania! We've got a hot north to northwesterly airstream coming our way, followed by a cooler southwesterly airstream thanks to a cold front. But don't get too comfortable, because a high pressure system is moving in over the Bight on Wednesday, bringing with it more unpredictable weather. And just when you thought it was safe to go outside, a cold front is approaching from the southwest on Friday, followed by another high pressure system on Saturday. So buckle up, folks, it's going to be a wild ride! Remember to stay safe out there, especially during any storms or heatwaves that may come our way. And maybe keep an umbrella handy, just in case Mother Nature decides to throw us another curveball.

NT:

Hold onto your hats, folks! There's a trough hanging out in the Gregory and Carpentaria Districts, causing some potential drama. And don't even get me started on the monsoon trough and weak tropical low loitering near the Gulf of Carpentaria coast - they're just looking for trouble. Expect an uptick in showers and thunderstorms across the northern and central parts of the NT as these troublemakers make their way westwards. A ridge is also directing easterly winds across the southern NT, adding to the chaos. So, stay safe out there, folks. Keep an eye on the skies and make sure you're prepared for any stormy shenanigans or heatwave hijinks that may come your way. And remember, it's always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to Mother Nature's mood swings.

NQ Rainfall 24 Accumulated (ACCESS G)

The new low has started to shape the rain into a swirl but still shaking off some remnants of rain to the South. The long range doesn't show it strengthening but shifting West and then weakening. In the meanwhile another 300 to 600mm of rain could be experienced in some locations over 4 days between Cardwell and Mackay.

Temperature and Rainfall Forecast - Access-G

Wednesday, 5th February

Prepare yourself for a mixed bag of weather across the vast expanse of southern Queensland. Expect the occasional sprinkle in the far south interior, with the rest of the inland areas staying mostly dry. As for the rest of the region, be on the lookout for isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms popping up here and there. In the eastern parts south of Rockhampton to Charleville, these showers may become more widespread, so don't be caught off guard. Up north, near St Lawrence, be prepared for showers turning into areas of rain, with the potential for some moderate to heavy downpours. Temperatures will be a bit wonky, with highs below average in central and northern Queensland, and hovering around average everywhere else. Keep an eye out for those light to moderate winds coming from the northeast to the southeast, possibly picking up in the far west. So, while Mother Nature does her thing with storms and heatwaves, remember to stay safe out there, folks. And maybe pack an umbrella, just in case.

Thursday, 6th February

Buckle up, folks! Looks like we've got a mixed bag of weather coming our way. Some areas might see a sprinkle here and there, while others could be in for a proper soaking. And let's not forget about those thunderstorms lurking around, ready to make some noise. Now, I know we all love a good storm, but let's not get too carried away. Remember to stay safe and dry out there. And with temperatures all over the place, it's important to keep an eye on the forecast and dress accordingly. So whether you're basking in the sun or dancing in the rain, just remember to take care of yourself out there. Mother Nature can be a bit unpredictable, but with some common sense and a good umbrella, we'll all weather the storm just fine.

Friday, 7th February

Prepare yourselves for a mixed bag of weather today, including the possibility of isolated showers or thunderstorms in the far southwest. Expect scattered showers, isolated thunderstorms, and even areas of rain from Mackay to Windorah, with the chance of moderate to heavy rainfall. Don't be surprised if you encounter some scattered showers in other areas as well. While temperatures will be below average in central and northern Queensland, they'll be closer to average elsewhere and slightly above average in the southern interior. Remember to stay safe and be prepared for whatever Mother Nature throws your way!

Saturday, 8th February

Prepare for some scattered showers and thunderstorms across the state, especially up north from Airlie Beach to Winton. Keep an eye out for heavy rainfall and isolated thunderstorms down south from Quilpie to Stanthorpe. Temperatures will be cooler than usual in central and northern Queensland, but slightly warmer in the south. Remember to stay safe during any stormy weather and keep cool during those heatwaves.

Region Round-up - BOM

North Tropical Coast and Tablelands

Region Forecast: Watch out, folks! Mother Nature is feeling a bit moody today, with a high chance of rain and thunderstorms on the horizon. Expect some heavy falls and possibly severe conditions, so stay safe out there. Make sure you have your umbrella and raincoat handy, as well as keeping an eye on any potential flooding. The winds will be light, but don't let that fool you - they'll be shifting from north to northeasterly throughout the day. Overnight temperatures will drop to the low to mid 20s, so be sure to stay cool and hydrated. Daytime temperatures will reach a balmy 26 to 31 degrees, so make sure to keep cool and avoid any heat-related illnesses. In conclusion, be cautious in the face of storms and heatwaves, and remember to stay safe out there!

And don't forget your rubber duckies! There's also a chance of a thunderstorm, possibly severe, so if you hear any loud booming noises, no need to panic - it's just Mother Nature having a little tantrum. The heavy falls in the south might make you feel like you're in a tropical rainforest, so be prepared to navigate some puddles and maybe even a mini river or two. With light winds in the morning, you might feel like you're in a gentle breeze, but don't be fooled - those northeasterly winds can pick up in the afternoon. And as temperatures reach around 30 degrees, you might start sweating like a pig in a sauna. Stay hydrated and find some shade if you can. Overnight temperatures might cool down a bit, but don't expect to be reaching for your winter coat just yet. It'll still be in the low to mid 20s, so you might want to keep the windows open for some fresh air. So, stay safe out there, folks!
