Queensland Synoptic

Queensland will be under the firm grip of a ridge for a while, thanks to a high chilling in the Tasman Sea - Tropical Cyclone Alfred will be doing its own thing in the Coral Sea, stirring up some winds and waves along the east coast - But don't hold your breath, the path of Alfred is as uncertain as a coin toss - Brace yourself, Alfred might decide to crash the Queensland party over the weekend, or just keep to itself out at sea - Meanwhile, a trough will be hanging out in the southwest, probably contemplating its existence for a few days.

Forecast for Herbert and Lower Burdekin:

Get ready to soak up some Vitamin D, my friends! The day is looking mostly sunny with a touch of light winds in the morning, which will switch to a southeasterly direction before calming down in the late afternoon. Overnight, temperatures will dip to a comfy 19-22 degrees, while daytime temps will soar into the low to mid 30s. Time to dust off those sunglasses and sunscreen - it's going to be a scorcher!

Monsoon Special:

The next monsoon pulse due in Phase 6 (Gulf to Coral Sea) around the 26th March to 2nd April. Due to the 3rd pulse normally being weak, it tends to come around quicker so could be a week earlier.

TC Alfred is now a Category 3 Severe Tropical Cyclone. The word Severe added is because it became a category 3, not my addition. The winds are 120km/h average (70knots) and pressure 976hPa. The GFS still lagging behind the others and looking at getting closer.

JTWC Report: Tropical Cyclone Alfred is currently located about 1035 km east of Cairns, moving southeast at 7 km/h. It has intensified to a category 3 system with sustained winds of 157 km/h and gusts up to 167 km/h. The cyclone is experiencing strong upper-level winds limiting its development, preventing an eye from forming. Over the next few days, Alfred will continue tracking southward, with a brief period where it may intensify slightly before weakening later in the week as it interacts with a passing weather system. Forecast models generally agree on the southward movement but differ on how fast it will track. It is expected to maintain cyclone strength for at least the next five days.
