Storms special report

Troughs shifting north & east confine showers & storms to NT, QLD, far southeast NSW, far eastern VIC & northeast TAS. Western trough maintains heat over WA, triggering occasional storms. High pressure keeps much of SA and eastern interior dry.

National

Weak pressure gradient, warm unstable air in northern Queensland. Broad trough extends over western, central, and southern Queensland. Southern part to cross southeast on Monday. Inland drifts west, weakens. High moves into Tasman Sea, then north, creating ridge over state. Ridge maintained by new high in Tasman Sea. New trough may cross southern Queensland next weekend.


State

Weak pressure gradient and warm, unstable air remains over northern Queensland. Broad trough stretches across western, central, and southern parts of the state. Southern part of trough to cross southeast Queensland on Monday, while inland portion weakens. High pressure to move into Tasman Sea on Monday and extend ridge over most of the state. Ridge to be maintained by new high late next week. Possible new trough in southern Queensland next weekend.


4-day

  • Saturday: Most of the state will have isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly inland. There could be severe thunderstorms in central and southern Queensland. Winds will be light to moderate from the northwest to northeast, but will turn southeast to southwest in the far southwest later in the day. The north and northeast will have severe heatwave conditions.

  • Sunday: Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms expected statewide, with possible severe thunderstorms in central and southern Queensland. Mostly sunny in the southwest. Severe heatwave conditions in the north and northeast. Maximum temperatures near average in the far southwest, above average elsewhere.

  • Monday: Most of the state will have showers and thunderstorms, with scattered showers along the east coast. The southwest will be mostly sunny. It will be very hot in the north and northeast. Maximum temperatures will be near average in the southeast and above average elsewhere.

  • Tuesday: Eastern districts will have isolated showers, while central and northern Queensland will have both isolated showers and a chance of a thunderstorm away from the east coast. The rest of the region will be mostly sunny. Severe heatwave conditions can be expected in the north and southwest. Maximum temperatures will be near average in eastern districts and above average elsewhere.

Max temperature: 30 to 35; Min temperature: low to mid 20s; Wind speed: light to 20 km/h; Wind direction: east to northeasterly; Rainfall: High chance of showers inland, medium chance elsewhere; Other: Partly cloudy, chance of thunderstorm.

Herbert and Lower Burdekin (Townsville):

Max temperature: 32-37, Min temperature: low to mid 20s, Wind speed: light to 20 km/h, Wind direction: north to northeasterly, Rainfall: High chance of showers, Other: Partly cloudy, chance of thunderstorm.

Central Coast and Whitsundays:

Max temperature: low to high 30s, Min temperature: low to mid 20s, Wind speed: light becoming northerly 15-25 km/h, Wind direction: northerly, Rainfall: slight chance of a shower, Other: partly cloudy, chance of a thunderstorm in the late morning.

Peninsula:

Max temperature: mid to high 30s | Min temperature: low to mid 20s | Wind speed: light, becoming east to northeasterly 15 to 20 km/h | Wind direction: east to northeasterly | Rainfall: Partly cloudy with high chance of showers south of Palmerville, medium chance elsewhere | Other: Chance of thunderstorm, light winds becoming east to northeasterly 15 to 20 km/h in the middle of the day then becoming light in the evening.

Max temperature: 40, Min temperature: mid 20s, Wind speed: 15-20 km/h, Wind direction: north to northwesterly, Rainfall: Partly cloudy with high chance of showers in the north and medium chance elsewhere, chance of thunderstorm with heavy falls near Northern Territory border in the afternoon and evening.

Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders:

Max temperature: 33 to 39°C, Min temperature: low to mid 20s, Wind speed: 15 to 20 km/h, Wind direction: N to NW, Rainfall: high chance of showers, partly cloudy, chance of thunderstorm.

Capricornia:

Central Highlands and Coalfields:
