Christmas:

Continuing to look ahead to Christmas day, a low pressure system is expected over Victoria and the NT, extending a trough over the dividing range. The trough is not expected to move too move on Christmas day, however on Boxing day it should move further East.

Storms:

Troughs bring showers & storms to NT's Top End, eastern QLD & northern WA, drawing heat northward and into the interior. Cool, southerly winds result in light showers in parts of NSW and northern Vic. Elsewhere, a drier airmass prevails.

Storms 2PM maturing


National

Ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper persists in Gulf of Carpentaria, may move east and strengthen trough in Coral Sea. Central, southern Queensland to experience trough movement, accompanied by showers and thunderstorms. Troughs weaken and new ones form in southeast, southwest, and cross southern Queensland. Trough expected to weaken by mid next week.

State

Ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper persists as a weak system in the Gulf of Carpentaria and may move east, possibly strengthening in the northern Coral Sea. A trough is also moving east over Queensland, enhancing showers and storms. Another trough will move into the southwest on Sunday and spread east across Queensland. A new upper trough may also enhance showers and storms over eastern Queensland. The trough may weaken by mid next week.

  • Friday: Thursday: Isolated showers and thunderstorms across most of the state, with more widespread rain in southeastern and central Queensland. Severe thunderstorms possible with heavy rain, strong winds, and hail in central and southern districts. Mostly clear in the far southwest. Winds generally from the northwest to northeasterly, then shifting to southeasterly in the southwest and southeast parts of the state.

  • Saturday: Scattered showers and storms statewide, except in the west. Chance of severe thunderstorms with strong winds, hail, and heavy rain in the southeast. Some sun in the far west. Temps below average in the southeast, above in the west, and near average elsewhere.

  • Sunday: Few showers and storms across the state, becoming more widespread in the southeast. Above-average temperatures in the west and central areas, near average elsewhere.

  • Monday: Some showers and thunderstorms across the state. Temperatures above average in the northwest, Central West District, and the southeast, and near average elsewhere.



North Tropical Coast and Tablelands:

Max temperature: around 30, Min temperature: 19-23, Wind speed: light, Wind direction: N/A, Rainfall: high chance of showers in the afternoon/evening, Chance of thunderstorm.

Herbert and Lower Burdekin:

Max temperature: 31 to 36, Min temperature: low to mid 20s, Wind speed: light winds becoming northerly 15 to 25 km/h in the morning then becoming light in the late evening, Wind direction: northerly, Rainfall: medium chance of showers, most likely in the afternoon, with the chance of a thunderstorm, Other: Partly cloudy.

Central Coast and Whitsundays:

Max temperature: low to mid 30s, Min temperature: low 20s, Wind: light becoming northerly 15 to 25 km/h, Rainfall: high chance of showers, Thunderstorms possible. Partly cloudy.

Peninsula:

Max temperature: low to mid 30s, Min temperature: low to mid 20s, Wind speed: light, Wind direction: not specified, Rainfall: high chance of showers in north of Weipa, medium chance elsewhere, Other: Partly cloudy, Chance of thunderstorm.

Gulf Country:

Max temperature: 35 to 42, Min temperature: mid to high 20s, Wind speed: north to northwesterly 15 to 20 km/h becoming light in the evening, Wind direction: north to northwesterly, Rainfall: Medium chance of showers in the east, most likely in the morning and afternoon, near zero chance of rain elsewhere, Other: Mostly sunny with a chance of thunderstorm in the morning and afternoon.

Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders:

The forecast includes a high of 33 to 40°C, low temperatures in the low to mid 20s, mostly sunny skies, a chance of showers, a potential thunderstorm, winds shifting from northwest to southwesterly, and reaching speeds of 15 to 20 km/h.

Capricornia:

Max temperature: 30, Min temperature: 19-22, Wind speed: light, Wind direction: north to northeasterly, Rainfall: showers, Other: chance of thunderstorm.

Central Highlands and Coalfields:

The weather will be partly cloudy with a high chance of showers, most likely in the early morning, and a chance of a severe thunderstorm. Wind speeds will be light, becoming north to northeasterly 15 to 20 km/h early in the morning then becoming light. The minimum temperature will be between 17 and 22, and the maximum temperature will be between 28 and 35.

Max temperature: 32 to 39, Min temperature: 19 to 23, Wind speed: 15 to 20km/h, Wind direction: east to southeasterly, Rainfall: near zero chance, Other: Mostly sunny with slight chance of shower in northeast and thunderstorm east of Longreach.
