Monsoon update

The weather system called INVEST 90P, which was previously around 15.5S 154.1E, is now located near 15.4S 154.2E, approximately 463 kilometers east-northeast of Willis Island. Images from satellites show a large area of circulation with concentrated deep storms and a trough extending westward. The environment for development is somewhat favorable with warm sea surface temperatures (29-30°C) and good airflow towards the equator, but there is high vertical wind shear (20-30 knots). Global models predict that 90P will generally move southwest over the next 24-36 hours. The estimated maximum sustained surface winds are between 28 to 33 knots, and the minimum sea level pressure is around 996 hPa. There is a high potential for the system to develop into a significant tropical cyclone in the next 24 hours.

Looking at the rainfall expected, somewhere between 70 and 140mm per 3 hours. That's the heaviest falls and they should be to the NW to Western side of the system.

Again I'm not concerning ourselves with where it will cross so much, while it looks like Townsville give or take 50 km up or down the coast, there is always the possibility it could do what Cyclone Dylan and Debbie did, and that is change to a more Southerly direction once it hits the reef and heads down between Bowen and Whitsundays. But prepare for any occurrence, even a ridge might push it up more to the North.

National

The monsoon trough and low-pressure systems are expected to bring heavy rain and storms across the northern tropics. Other troughs may cause showers and storms over northwest WA, spreading heat across the interior and east. A tropical cyclone over the Coral Sea is anticipated to move southwest.
