Monsoon update

As of January 23, 2024, the tropical cyclone named 07P (Seven) is positioned near 17.2S 153.4E. It is approximately 829 kilometers east of Cairns, Australia, and has been moving south-southwestward at a speed of 11.1 kilometers per hour in the last six hours. The minimum central pressure observed at 230600Z is 993 hPa, with a maximum significant wave height recorded at the same time being 4.57 meters.

Not a huge amount of cloud produced today but we should see it build tonight as the humidity climbs and that is thrown up high and condenses into cloud. It is tracking SW as much as a low will. Expect a cyclone to be called within 6 to 12 hours.

The rain amounts shown to be maxed around the Western side, but predominantly the rain is on the NW quadrant. That means the heavy rain NW of the cyclone eye if it forms, and the wind is a little interesting. Two of the models show the strongest wind gusts to the North, and one to the South. That means there is a high chance the wind and rain will be strongest to the North.

State

Weak troughs over southwestern Queensland and New South Wales will strengthen later this week. A trough extends across northern Cape York Peninsula and the Coral Sea, persisting for the next few days. Slow-moving tropical low (05U) in the central Coral Sea is expected to become a cyclone and move southwestward toward the east Queensland coast. Likely to cross the coast between Cardwell and Airlie Beach on Thursday, it will then move inland and further south, posing a risk of widespread rain, flooding, and significant impacts on central, southern, and southeastern Queensland from Friday to the weekend.
