National

Troughs and lows will continue to generate heavy showers and storms across the tropics, interior, SA, western QLD, western NSW, and western VIC. Humidity will be maintained in the east, while heat persists across the interior and north. Onshore winds are expected to bring showers to QLD's east coast.

State

A trough will remain over western Queensland for days, extending into southern Australia while an upper trough moves across the south. A ridge is over the east coast, strengthening until Saturday when a high reaches the Tasman Sea. The ridge weakens Monday as the high moves away. The trough may slowly move east from Monday, weakening by Wednesday. A potential monsoon trough is showing in the Arafura Sea in mid-January.

  • Saturday: Scattered showers and thunderstorms across most of state, isolated showers on east coast. Possible severe thunderstorms with heavy rain in southeast interior. Light to moderate winds shifting from northeast to northwest. At times fresh winds on southeast coast. Heatwave in far north and southwest.

  • Sunday: Sunday: Scattered showers and thunderstorms across most of the state, mainly showers in the southeast and east coast. Periods of rain in the southwest. Severe thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and heatwave conditions in the far north. Temperature above average north, below average southwest, and near average elsewhere.

  • Monday: Most of the state will have scattered showers and thunderstorms, with only showers in the southeast and Cooktown to Townsville on the east coast. Showers will be widespread at times with periods of rain in the southern and central interior. Far north will experience heatwave conditions. Maximum temperatures will be below average in the west and the southern and central interior, and near average elsewhere.

  • Tuesday: Scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the state, mainly showers on the east coast. Showers widespread at times in the interior. Below average temperatures in the west and central/southern interior, near average elsewhere.


North Tropical Coast and Tablelands:

Max temperature: 35, Min temperature: 19, Wind speed: easterly 15 to 25 km/h, Wind direction: light, Rainfall: partly cloudy with medium chance of showers near the coast and slight chance elsewhere.

Herbert and Lower Burdekin:

The max temperature is 32 to 37 with a minimum temperature in the low to mid 20s, wind speeds of 15 to 20 km/h becoming light in the evening, a slight chance of a shower, and a chance of a thunderstorm in the south from late morning with mostly sunny conditions.

Central Coast and Whitsundays:

Max temperature: 30 to 35; Min temperature: low to mid 20s; Wind speed: light; Wind direction: easterly; Rainfall: medium chance of showers in late morning/afternoon; Other: partly cloudy, chance of thunderstorm.

Peninsula:

Max temperature: mid to high 30s; Min temperature: mid 20s; Wind: light, becoming east to northeasterly 15 to 25 km/h; Rainfall: high chance of showers near the west coast, slight chance elsewhere; Other: partly cloudy, chance of thunderstorm.

Gulf Country:

Max temperature: mid to high 30s, Min temperature: mid to high 20s, Wind speed: light winds becoming north to northeasterly 15 to 20 km/h, Wind direction: north to northwesterly, Rainfall: high chance of showers, most likely in the morning and afternoon, Other: partly cloudy, chance of a thunderstorm.

Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders:

Max temperature: 40, Min temperature: low to mid 20s, Wind speed: becoming east to northeasterly 15 to 25 km/h, Wind direction: northeasterly, Rainfall: slight chance of a shower, Other: Mostly sunny with a chance of thunderstorm.

Capricornia:

Central Highlands and Coalfields:

North West:

Max temperature: 36 to 41 °C, Min temperature: mid to high 20s °C, Wind speed: light winds becoming 15 to 20 km/h, Wind direction: north to northwesterly in the morning, then north to northeasterly in the middle of the day, Rainfall: Partly cloudy with medium chance of showers, most likely in the late morning and afternoon, with a chance of a thunderstorm.
