Storms and tropical low special report

Storms mainly across the NT, QLD to barely see one today. WA and NSW and to a lesser extent Northern SA and East Victoria also to see storms. The High over NZ very slow to move but new one sneaking in.

The weak High over NZ is going to allow the tropical low North of Vanuatu to now more than likely move towards Fiji, but at this stage only as a low and break up once it reaches Fiji on Monday. National

High near New Zealand maintains Eastern Queensland ridge. Tropical moisture drawn into Western Queensland by central Australian trough. Southeast Queensland sees enhanced showers and thunderstorms with upper trough. Slow-moving trough affects southern, western, and central Queensland next week. Increased shower and thunderstorm activity in southeast due to upper trough crossing

mid week.


State

A high near New Zealand will keep a ridge over eastern Queensland, while a trough in central Australia brings tropical moisture to western Queensland. Showers and thunderstorms will be enhanced by an upper trough in southeastern Queensland today. A trough will gradually move east across southern, western, and central Queensland next week and stay inland for a few days. There is a chance of increased shower and thunderstorm activity in the southeast as an upper trough crosses southern Queensland mid next week.


4-day

  • Saturday: Isolated showers and thunderstorms in inland QLD, risk of severe storms in southeast inland. Scattered showers and storms in western QLD, heavy falls in northwest. Partly cloudy elsewhere. Light to moderate east/northeast winds.

  • Sunday: Western Queensland will have isolated showers and thunderstorms while the east coast will be partly cloudy with isolated showers in the Wet Tropics. The rest of the area will be mostly sunny. Temperatures will be above average in the southwest, below average along the east coast and in the north. Central and northern interior areas will experience a high fire danger.

  • Monday: Expect scattered showers and thunderstorms in the western Gulf Country and southern inland areas. The Wet Tropics will see some isolated showers with partly cloudy skies. The rest of the region will be mostly sunny. Temperatures will be higher in the south and lower in the north. Additionally, there will be a high risk of fires in the interior.

  • Tuesday: Southern inland districts have isolated showers and thunderstorms. The Wet Tropics will be partly cloudy with isolated showers. Otherwise, it will be mostly sunny. Maximum temperatures will be above average south of Hughenden and near average everywhere else. From Thursday, maximum temperatures in the southwest and southeast will be near average. The interior will experience high fire danger.


Townsville

Min 22°C, Max 31°C, Mostly sunny with a 5% chance of rain. Light winds becoming east to northeasterly at 20-30 km/h in the morning, then becoming light in the late evening.

Herbert and Lower Burdekin

Min 19°C, Max 31°C, Mostly sunny, 0% chance of rain. Light winds becoming east to northeasterly at 25-35 km/h in the morning.

North Tropical Coast and Tablelands

Min 17°C, Max 31°C, Mostly sunny with a 0% chance of rain. Winds from the east to southeasterly at 20-30 km/h.

Cairns

Min 21°C, Max 31°C, Mostly sunny with a 10% chance of rain. Light winds, turning southeasterly at 20-30 km/h in the morning, and becoming light in the evening.

Mackay

Min 19°C, Max 29°C, Mostly sunny with a 10% chance of rain. Light winds, becoming easterly at 15-25 km/h in the morning.

Northern Goldfields

Min 22°C, Max 37°C, Mostly sunny with a 0% chance of rain. A chance of a thunderstorm in the west during the morning and afternoon. Winds northeast to southeasterly at 20-30 km/h.

Mt Isa

Min 21°C, Max 32°C, Showers with a chance of rain: 70%. Partly cloudy with a high chance of showers, mainly in the morning and afternoon, and a chance of thunderstorms during that time. Light winds becoming northeasterly at 15-20 km/h in the morning, then becoming light in the late afternoon.
