BOM 3:30 am ACST – Tropical Cyclone Fina

Fina is still a Category 2 cyclone sitting over the Timor Sea, almost stationary. Current position is near 9.5°S 132.9°E, about 395 km north-east of Darwin and 190 km north-north-east of Minjilang.

There has been little change since the last update – still Cat 2, still slow moving. BOM still expects it to turn south today then southwest towards the Cobourg Peninsula and Tiwi Islands on Friday/Saturday, and say a brief Cat 3 phase near land can’t be ruled out.

Warning areas (BOM is the official source):

• Warning zone: Cape Don to Warruwi, including Cobourg Peninsula and Minjilang.

• Watch zone: Tiwi Islands, Cape Hotham east to Maningrida, and inland to Gunbalanya.

What this means for people right now

• Cobourg Peninsula (Cape Don–Warruwi): Gales with damaging gusts to ~120 km/h could develop later today, increasing on Friday with a risk of destructive gusts to ~155 km/h as the centre comes closer.

• Tiwi Islands, Cape Hotham–Maningrida, Gunbalanya: Still in the watch zone – expect increasing showers, heavier rain bands and strengthening winds from Friday, with the risk of storm tide and coastal flooding if the centre crosses nearby.

• Darwin/Palmerston and nearby rural areas: Not in the warning zone at this stage, but close enough that people should keep an eye on updates, tidy up yards and secure loose items given the wet ground and the risk of trees coming down.
