Tropical Cyclone Fina is a category 2 system sitting well north of the Top End, slowly drifting south. Winds near the centre are around 95 km/h with gusts to 130 km/h. It’s about 380 km northeast of Darwin and north of the Cobourg Peninsula, barely moving at the moment.
Over the next couple of days Fina is expected to:
Keep tracking slowly south, then southwest on Friday,
Move close to the Cobourg Peninsula and Tiwi Islands late Friday,
Then drift southwest through Van Diemen Gulf on Saturday,
Stay around category 2, with a small chance of briefly reaching category 3 late Friday or early Saturday.
Who’s in the firing line?
Warning area: Milikapiti to Maningrida, including Cobourg Peninsula, Minjilang and Warruwi.
Watch area: Daly River Mouth to Gunbalanya, including Dundee Beach, Darwin, Batchelor and the Tiwi Islands.
What to expect
Gales (up to ~120 km/h):
Possible on the Cobourg Peninsula tonight,
Spreading to Milikapiti to Maningrida on Friday,
Tiwi Islands late Friday,
Darwin to Gunbalanya on Saturday, and possibly Batchelor and Daly River Mouth late Saturday.
Destructive gusts (up to ~155 km/h):
Possible Cape Don to Warruwi on Friday,
Extending to the Tiwi Islands early Saturday, and possibly Darwin later Saturday if the core comes close enough.
Heavy rain & flash flooding:
From Friday between the Tiwi Islands and Maningrida,
Spreading across the western Top End, including Darwin, on Saturday.
A Flood Watch is already current for the northwest Top End.
Storm tide & dangerous coastal flooding:
Higher than normal tides around the Tiwi Islands and between Cape Hotham and Maningrida,
A dangerous storm tide is possible as the cyclone crosses the coast, with large waves and flooding of low-lying areas.
What you should do
If you’re between Milikapiti and Maningrida (including the Tiwi Islands and Cobourg) – finish your preparations now: secure boats, loose items and property while it’s still daylight.
If you’re elsewhere between Daly River Mouth and Gunbalanya, including Darwin and Batchelor – review your cyclone plan and be ready to act if the warning area is expanded.
