Special Report

The monsoon trough is finally making an appearance. While we have seen 3 cyclones in the Southern Hemisphere already, none appeared to be attached to the classic monsoon trough. The monsoon trough is a trough that sits along the equator and collects warm humid air. This is normally where tropical systems develop. The trough will shift South over the top end and we can see this drawn in as a dot-dash line across the top end in this synoptic chart. The second chart to the right shows that the monsoon has shifted close to the Western region off the coast of WA, and by the time this is updated we should see it there this weekend. However, the weak low near the coast that should form may need to move to the Gulf (Northern region) to be able to deepen. Checking the water temps down the page, we can see this whole area is very warm.

So the wet season begins, pretty much on time and now we see if we get some rain.

National

Troughs will bring heavy showers and storms to the tropical north, interior, QLD, and eastern NSW. WA may experience inland thunderstorms due to troughs while maintaining hot air across the interior and west. High pressure is expected to keep other regions dry and settled.

State

A trough in western Queensland will move eastwards with unsettled conditions and moisture. It will weaken over southern Inland from Wednesday. A ridge along the east coast will strengthen later this week. The monsoon trough may develop in the Arafura Sea and extend towards the Gulf of Carpentaria, Torres Strait or northern Peninsula over next weekend. Increased shower and thunderstorm activity is expected in far northern Queensland due to convergence between monsoonal and southeasterly winds.
