Queensland Synoptic

Southern Queensland is feeling the effects of a weakening ridge, while the rest of the state is dealing with a weak pressure gradient; Severe Tropical Cyclone Alfred is causing trouble in the Coral Sea, potentially heading towards central or southern Queensland next week; A trough from the southwest will stick around in the state's interior for a few days, so be prepared for some unsettled weather.

Forecast for Herbert and Lower Burdekin:

Looks like another day of clear skies and gentle breezes on the horizon! As the sun sets, expect temperatures to dip down to a cozy 17-21 degrees, but fear not - by day, we'll be soaking up the warmth with highs in the low to mid 30s. Time to break out the sunscreen and sunglasses, folks!

Monsoon Special:

The next monsoon pulse due in Phase 6 (Gulf to Coral Sea) around the 26th March to 2nd April. Due to the 3rd pulse normally being weak, it tends to come around quicker so could be a week earlier.

Severe Tropical Cyclone Alfred is currently 1,050 km east of Cairns, moving slowly southeast at 7 km/h with winds near the centre of 215 km/h (115 knots) and gusts higher. The cyclone is weakening due to cooler waters and strong winds from the west. Over the next two days, it will move slowly before picking up speed towards the southeast as a ridge to the east takes control. Alfred is expected to weaken further, dropping to 120 km/h (65 knots) by the end of the forecast period. There is some uncertainty in its exact track, but it is likely to stay offshore. March 02 it is expected to swing as close to the coast at this stage that we know of. There is a possible crossing later, but the forecasts are vague on this just now.
